About us

Fulfilling a dream of owning property in their birthplace Karlovasi, two Greek-Canadians, Diamantis Foustanellas and his sister Athena's husband Jim Psarras ventured into a partnership to purchase land together in 1986. In 1988, Diamantis and his Ottawa-born wife Toula moved to the town of Karlovasi with their then two young children Maria and Alex.

Always a man of adventure, Diamantis quickly started construction on the property to build a new business in tourism. So by 1989, the first structure housing 23 studios and apartments was already under way. The new operation needed a name... the partners simply selected the initial letters of their childrens' names to form the word ANEMA. Thus the Anema by-the-sea Hotel Apartments entity was formally established.

Inspite of the consistent growth and development of the business, it still remains a family-run operation occupying mostly local staff. Today there are 55 studios and apartments, reception, traditional tavern, fine dining restaurant, pool, pool bar, snack bar, cafe, playground and tennis to better accomodate their guests. Anema's most recent endevour is the construction of a wood-burning oven which adds a perfect touch to the homemade recipes served at the traditional tavern.

Anema by-the sea Hotel Apartments enjoys a plythora of clientele from all parts of Europe and Greece. Through the years valuable experience has been gained from working with different cultures. Fact is the natural beauty of the island is what the guests appreciate the most and they value their exceptional discoveries on Samos island. This was an incentive for Anema to broaden to the special interest tourism market to include adventure travellers, small walking groups etc. Anema is committed to sharing yet preserving the island's natural and cultural heritage.

Essential aims of the company include protecting the environment, supporting the local economy, conserving energy and limiting wastes. We economize on electric power with the use of solar energy, natural fuels, energy efficient lighting etc. Measures are also taken for water-efficiency. Well-water is used for gardening and other appropriate uses. Local goods, environmentally friendly & recycled products are preferred. Any excess produce from the kitchen feeds the turtles in the sanctuary as well as other local animals.

The Anema staff are devoted their guests΄ satisfaction and incorporate a personal touch to their services.

Many thanks to the our family, friends, collegues and local KEK seminar group members for their ongoing support and to those who've dedicated many hours in researching the information & providing photos for this website. Special thanks to our friend George Miliotis and his friends who created the original ANEMA website, which is the basis of this revised edition.
